FIFA 99

A safe haven for people who love “orta – kafa – gol.” If you know, you know.

I love this game. For me, it’s a great alternative to World Cup 98. It offers a wider selection of teams and features. The gameplay is very similar to FIFA 98 and WC 98, so you can start playing it as if you’ve been playing it for years.

The menus are decent, though the navigation buttons can be a little confusing—but not too bad. I wasn’t expecting the up arrow to act as the exit game button, but aside from that, the rest is the classic FIFA experience.

There are quite a few teams and stadiums to choose from. You can also set the time of the match to night or day. Additionally, there’s an option to choose the weather. The weather effects are well done—during snow, you can see snowflakes, and the pitch takes on a slightly paler green tone. I don’t know why I have an obsession with weather effects, but I find it to be an important feature. Maybe I’m alone in that, though.

The in-game controls are more similar to World Cup 98. For instance, corner and free kicks have that arrow mechanic where you can bend your shot for a curled effect. The rest of the controls are pretty much the same as FIFA 98/WC 98. I’ve been playing the game with a SideWinder and didn’t need to adjust anything.

The game’s AI is slightly improved. Some of the strange and funny things you’d encounter in FIFA 98 are gone, but goalkeepers are still not very smart. Your teammates are usually in the right position when you’re trying to pass the ball. A friend of mine complained about the lack of a radar, but that’s not an issue for me. I just pass the ball, hoping someone will catch it.

The graphics are great. A 3DFX Voodoo II card does its usual fantastic job, especially when paired with a good CPU. The computer I used to play this game was slightly over-specced compared to the recommended requirements, but I wanted to ensure smooth gameplay for you to watch.

As I mentioned earlier, I love this game. I enjoyed it in the past, and I still enjoy it today because I’m still playing it often. I’m not interested in recent football games—I believe they’ve lost the fun factor. This one, however, is the perfect football game in my opinion.
