Age of Wonders

I really wanted to love this game, but I couldn’t. Why? Because I suck at it.

There are some games I just can’t understand how they work. It doesn’t matter how many in-game tutorials I check or gameplay videos I watch; I just can’t wrap my head around the game’s logic. Age of Wonders turned out to be one of those.

The first thing I want to mention is how beautiful the game looks. The graphics and artwork are amazing. You can definitely tell the game is well made, and the people who worked on it did their best.

The game starts with a tutorial, which gives some understanding of how things work; however, it doesn’t cover everything. When the game started for real, I had almost no idea what I should be doing. I didn’t know if it was a good idea to roam around mindlessly or attack everything I saw. The objectives were also unclear, with no information about the units, their effectiveness, or what enemy units are.

After a few tries, I managed to win the first game. I think for the YouTube video I didn’t include all the retries because it would have been really boring to watch. Plus, it would have been something like 4 hours long. At the end of the first mission, I felt like I was getting the hang of it and felt a bit more confident continuing… but it didn’t turn out that way.

In the next episode, I just failed over and over again. Movement was limited, and the distance always seemed longer than my total movement allowance. I tried everything I could think of, checked some guides, but eventually, it started to feel more frustrating than fun.

So, I’ve given up. I really want to give the game another try at some point, but I have hundreds of other games waiting to be played, so I think it will have to wait for the foreseeable future.
